In 2022, the Lions Medical Eye Bank established the Ernie Hardee Scholarship Fund, supported in part by the Lions Clubs of District 24I. The Ernie Hardee Scholarship will be awarded to one EVMS Ophthalmology student yearly to help defray the cost of medical school as they study to become the next generation of physicians to give the Gift of Sight.
During his 30+ year tenure as a Co-Founder, Chairman, Director, Treasurer, and ultimately Director Emeritus of the eye bank, Lion Ernie ushered many significant programs into being. He was the driving force behind
establishing and growing reserves, investing in new and cutting-edge technologies, establishing a program for helping patients afford cornea transplants, and funding the establishment of eye banks in developing areas like the Lions Medical Eye Bank of the Philippines. Lion Ernie believed in our community and was dedicated to ensuring that everyone we serve was represented through leadership. He was truly passionate about sight preservation and restoration.
We consider it our honor and privilege to establish a scholarship as a fitting tribute to the tremendous example of leadership set by Lion Ernest Hardee as a way to continue his impact through the education of future leaders.
